Research Questions:

How do third and fourth year post-secondary visual arts students use Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool/medium in their art practices?

How does using AI s a tool/medium in art creation influence their perceptions of the process and outcomes of art making?

In the Fall 2024 semester, Twyla Exner offered a Special Topics class titled “Explorations in Art and AI”. Each week, Exner referred to the research questions in order to create reflection prompts for the class to respond to. Responses varied, yet showed a consistency in artists seeing the potentials of AI as a tool in art-making. Concerns with the ethics of this tool saw participants dealing with emotion and reason. As well, participants dealt with the niche impracticalities of the tool, such as user engagement and perceived perceptions.

This research is guided conceptually by the exploration of the influence of making art with AI on post-secondary student artistic outcomes and perceptions of the processes of that art making. This research is exploratory and subjective.
